While arguably the downfall started a while ago, it has been intensified in the last few years with a rapid-fire succession of events, including a pandemic, wars, genocides, and a noticeable decline in the living conditions of ordinary people. For the progressive electorate, largely constituted of white-collar workers, AI is poised to be at the center of the narrative.\u003C/p>\u003Ch3>\u003Cstrong>Anti-AI\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\u003Cp>There’s something profoundly wrong about AI. While the concerns may be dressed up in environmental or ethical arguments, for most of us, they are still rooted in a tangible fear for one’s economic stability. Nothing else explains the rise of this internet neo-Luddism. The situation in the streets is still considerably more tame, for now.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>The growingly popular stance in some industries is being anti-AI. This discourse, while emotionally accurate, is very much reactionary and fundamentally flawed in two ways: it has no memory, and it proposes no credible future. More importantly perhaps, it’s a divisive political movement.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>At best, the mainstream anti-AI discourse serves as a personal consumption choice, which is completely valid but has little repercussion outside of oneself. At worst, when used as an excuse to lash out at those who use AI, it can become a misguided escape valve, more about virtue signaling to an akin social group than proposing viable solutions. It’s social network dynamics mixed with identity politics at their worst.\u003C/p>\u003Ch3>\u003Cstrong>Watchful Skepticism\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\u003Cp>At the time of writing this, AI’s alleged productivity gains have been nowhere near as promised. It’s clear, however, that it will change a number of professions significantly. It’s hard to find out what is true and what is not amidst the growing noise, but one thing should be abundantly clear: ignoring AI can be a costly mistake. AI companies may come and go, but the technology it is founded on is here to stay. We can’t afford to turn a blind eye to it.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>While the naivety of techno-optimism can make us ignore the many red flags of this technology, the frontal opposition to it is also bound to render us irrelevant and therefore powerless. This is why a watchful skepticism is the healthiest middle ground we can find. Let’s experiment with it, let’s test out its limits and adapt to them, let’s figure out what it should and shouldn’t be used for. But let’s not forget its risks.\u003C/p>\u003Ch3>\u003Cstrong>The Scapegoat\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\u003Cp>When things get rough, it’s customary to look for a scapegoat. AI is the perfect scapegoat; in fact, it proposes itself as one. Let’s not forget for a second that AI is just a complex tool. At this point, a large part of society is either using it or will soon be using it. In the same way that refusing to use a computer is unthinkable in this day and age, soon refusing to use AI will be a romantic and self-immolating professional choice.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>The economic situation is bound to get worse. And as it gets worse, AI will no doubt be the battleground for the political narrative of the downfall of qualified white-collar workers. Impugning AI before impugning the system that created it is a failed proposition.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Raging against such an elusive tool, however, only serves to boost its sense of importance. More importantly, raging against anybody making use of it only serves to divide us. We have to stop this panic attack now; we must stop squabbling over the inevitable. A guy I don’t usually agree with said something very insightful once: ‘in times of crisis, the ideas will be picked up from those lying around.’ It’s about time we sit down and start proposing ideas before it truly hits the fan. The risk is great, but so is the opportunity.\u003C/p>\u003Ch3>\u003Cstrong>Looking back to look forward\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\u003Cp>If we want to tell the story of AI properly, we have to talk about the crooked incentives of our extractivist capitalism. About the emphasis on productivity over humanity. We have to talk about the accumulation of wealth by Big Tech - and the profound impacts of their monopolistic platforms on our society; Amazon, Google, Meta. About how they accumulated their wealth and how it could have been prevented. We have to talk about many complicated subjects, and we have to educate each other on them.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Let me be clear, we are profoundly against what AI represents, and we wish it didn’t exist. But the moment it exists and we realize it’s not going away, we are forced to think about a future that starts off from that square, as bleak as it looks. In an increasingly polarized society, the easier route is to unambiguously adhere to the closest existing discourse. That is not our way forward as a society. Do not confuse this with complacency - on the contrary, this is about political ambition. AI is the battleground for textbook class war, and we the working class had better start finding common interests and get our shit together.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>\u003Cem>[To be continued]\u003C/em>\u003C/p>","\u003Cp>Es innegable que vivimos en una era profundamente confusa. Si bien podría decirse que la caída comenzó hace tiempo, se ha intensificado en los últimos años con una rápida sucesión de eventos, que incluyen una pandemia, guerras, genocidios y un notable deterioro de las condiciones de vida de la gente común. Para el electorado progresista, compuesto en gran parte por trabajadores administrativos, la IA está destinada a estar en el centro de la narrativa.\u003C/p>\u003Ch3>\u003Cstrong>Anti-IA\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\u003Cp>Hay algo profundamente erróneo en la IA. Si bien las preocupaciones pueden disfrazarse de argumentos ambientales o éticos, para la mayoría de nosotros, todavía están arraigadas en un temor tangible por la estabilidad económica. Nada más explica el auge de este neoludismo en internet. La situación en las calles sigue siendo considerablemente más tranquila, por ahora.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>La postura cada vez más popular en algunos sectores es la anti-IA. Este discurso, si bien emocionalmente preciso, es muy reaccionario y fundamentalmente defectuoso en dos sentidos: carece de memoria y no propone un futuro creíble. Y lo que es quizás más importante, es un movimiento político divisivo. En el mejor de los casos, el discurso anti-IA dominante sirve como una opción de consumo personal, lo cual es completamente válido, pero tiene poca repercusión fuera de uno mismo. En el peor, cuando se usa como excusa para arremeter contra quienes usan IA, puede convertirse en una válvula de escape equivocada, más centrada en la señalización de virtudes a un grupo social afín que en proponer soluciones viables. Es la dinámica de las redes sociales mezclada con la política de identidades en su peor expresión. Al momento de escribir esto, las supuestas ganancias de productividad de la IA no han sido ni de lejos las prometidas. Sin embargo, está claro que cambiará significativamente varias profesiones. Es difícil discernir qué es cierto y qué no en medio del creciente ruido, pero algo debería quedar meridianamente claro: ignorar la IA puede ser un error costoso. Las empresas de IA pueden surgir y desaparecer, pero la tecnología en la que se basa llegó para quedarse. No podemos permitirnos ignorarla. Si bien la ingenuidad del tecnooptimismo puede hacernos ignorar las numerosas señales de alerta de esta tecnología, la oposición frontal a ella también nos volverá irrelevantes y, por lo tanto, impotentes. Por eso, un escepticismo prudente es el punto intermedio más saludable que podemos encontrar. Experimentemos con ella, probemos sus límites y adaptémonos a ellos, averigüemos para qué debería y para qué no debería usarse. Pero no olvidemos sus riesgos. Cuando las cosas se ponen difíciles, es habitual buscar un chivo expiatorio. La IA es el chivo expiatorio perfecto; de hecho, se propone a sí misma como tal. No olvidemos ni por un segundo que la IA es simplemente una herramienta compleja. Actualmente, gran parte de la sociedad la utiliza o pronto la utilizará. De la misma manera que negarse a usar una computadora es impensable hoy en día, negarse a usar IA pronto será una decisión profesional romántica y autoinmoladora. La situación económica está destinada a empeorar. Y a medida que empeora, la IA será sin duda el campo de batalla de la narrativa política sobre la caída de los trabajadores cualificados. Impugnar la IA antes de impugnar el sistema que la creó es una propuesta fallida. Sin embargo, enfurecerse contra una herramienta tan esquiva solo sirve para aumentar su sentido de importancia. Más importante aún, enfurecerse contra cualquiera que la utilice solo sirve para dividirnos. Tenemos que detener este ataque de pánico ahora; debemos dejar de discutir sobre lo inevitable. Un tipo con el que no suelo coincidir dijo algo muy perspicaz: «En tiempos de crisis, las ideas se recogen de los que están por ahí». Ya es hora de que nos sentemos y empecemos a proponer ideas antes de que la cosa se ponga fea. El riesgo es grande, pero también lo es la oportunidad.\u003C/p>\u003Ch3>\u003Cstrong>Mirar atrás para mirar hacia adelante\u003C/strong>\u003C/h3>\u003Cp>Si queremos contar la historia de la IA correctamente, tenemos que hablar de los incentivos corruptos de nuestro capitalismo extractivista. Del énfasis en la productividad por encima de la humanidad. Tenemos que hablar de la acumulación de riqueza por parte de las grandes tecnológicas y del profundo impacto de sus plataformas monopolísticas en nuestra sociedad: Amazon, Google, Meta. De cómo acumularon su riqueza y cómo podría haberse evitado. Tenemos que hablar de muchos temas complejos y educarnos mutuamente sobre ellos.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>Seamos claros: estamos profundamente en contra de lo que representa la IA y desearíamos que no existiera. Pero en el momento en que existe y nos damos cuenta de que no va a desaparecer, nos vemos obligados a pensar en un futuro que parte de esa base, por muy sombrío que parezca. En una sociedad cada vez más polarizada, la ruta más fácil es adherirse sin ambigüedades al discurso existente más cercano. Ese no es nuestro camino a seguir como sociedad. No confundan esto con complacencia; al contrario, se trata de ambición política.
